Fellow northerner Dan sent me a few of his favorite Alaskan blogs. One was violent and bigoted and utterly compelling–although fascinating I couldn’t bring myself to post it simply because I can’t publicly propagate some of the nasty racism and hatred without any kind of context. But it’s a pretty intense look at a small Alaskan settlement and I might pass the url on if you email me.
I have, however, added a couple of Dan’s other suggested northern blogs to the sidebar. In order to not feel defeated by technology (my ‘upgraded’ operating system does not allow me to FTP photos the way I could with ‘lower’ versions. Talk about stupid!) I tweaked the sidebar a bit and added some more blogs I like to read. I should take heart from the fact that Sharmeen’s blog is highly entertaining and she never posts photos …
Regardless, I wanted to post photos from the costume party @ the guild. I was the queen of hearts from Alice in Wonderland! I made big fabric hearts for my bodice, and tacked shiny fabric hearts and playing cards all over a long black skirt. I wore a tiara with a jeweled heart in the middle, and had my hair swept up in princess Leah rolls with tiny sprigs of fabric roses popping out. I had a sprig attached to my watch, too, and a red heart painted on each arm and each cheek.
But the best part was that I successfully created a neon pink flamingo croquet mallet that I was able to wield wantonly and use to clock people, yelling “Off with your head!” at the slightest whim.
It was far less abstract than my usual costumes (’flotsam’ anyone? I thought it was a most excellent attire, bronze and blue sequined fishy dress, a message in a bottle, a fishnet with a rubber ducky caught in it, some plastic fish, driftwood, all manner of garbage from the sea. But even when I tried to explain the concept, many people were confused by the actual word …).
My friend Christine went as Kali, with a skirt of skeleton parts hanging from her waist, charms of dangling heads, a necklace of skulls, bracelets of snakes, and fierce black makeup.
There were a few outstanding costumes, such as the twin mini-me’s, one of whom would get down on her knees to be true mini-me height, and hump the legs of passersby …
