mouse!

I am staying a few days at an absent friend’s apartment.
There is no denying the occasional, scrabbly-feet sound on the hardwood floor (usually there is a dog here, perhaps the mouse is a new visitor). Although I haven’t seen it, surely soon I will: the fast dart of fur, pink feet and tail shooting past. I don’t like to think of the little critter running over me as I sleep … a friend of mine from TO days used to have this problem (there were mice nesting in the chimney), and it really unnerved her.
For some reason, the little scrabble sound spikes my heart rate, perhaps in expectation of a furry encounter. But what would I do? I guess I should buy a mousetrap tomorrow … but what is a humane mousetrap? Supposedly, one must deport the critters at least 2 km away or they will return to roost …
