My sis and bro and I all received books from a friend who has known us well since our diaper days. My brother was given The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night (a charming, prize-winning mystery novel involving an autistic savant); my sister received a guidebook for kayaking the northern pacific coast, Oregon to northern BC. And I was gifted with “How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk.”
It remains to be seen if the ’scientifically proven’ methods funded by the Pentagon and taught on military bases and by chaplains throughout the bible belt are well matched to guide me to a life of connubial bliss. However, it is a hefty tome, and at the bus stop I reflected that if nothing else it would be useful for clocking any assailants melting out of the shadows. And it could provide hours of distraction as I attempt to meet a deadline so I can take off to the Tetrahedrons for new year’s.
To be fair, something about living up north, and having a job where I daily had to make decisions that had impacts on other people and occasionally the political sphere, lowered my bullshit threshhold. The daily practice of being results-based, strategic, and carrying a significant degree of responsibility in my work life augured for the application of a cool, clinical, and cutting mind to the sentimental sphere. The last two years have led to occasional forays–indeed, the increasing incursion–of common sense into affairs of my heart.
Impending sleepyness is curbing elaboration and word play about dis-closure (an etymology with many roots and openings).
